Staples gives you varies to return most items. There is no single window. Office supplies and unopened ink can go back any time, technology and furniture get 14 days, and Staples Brands products get a full year. Every item has its own Return Eligibility Expiry Date on the Order Details page.

The basics

How: Online, catalogue and phone orders can go back to any Staples retail store with the receipt or packing slip, or be returned free online. In-store purchases must go back to a store.
Refund timing: Refunds go to the original payment method where possible. In store, cash, debit or cheque with a receipt is refunded in cash. Cash, cheque or a debit payment without the card, over $500 before tax, comes back as a corporate cheque.

Different deadlines

1 year: Staples Brands products you are not happy with, for an exchange or refund, with a receipt or the original packaging.
Any time: office supplies, both online and in store.
Any time: unopened, unexpired ink and toner cartridges.
Any time: non-seasonal party supplies.
30 days: unopened boxed software Staples still sells.
30 days: AppleCare+ bought at Staples, for a full refund. After that, Apple handles it and prorates it.
14 days: technology and business machines (computers, laptops, printers, tablets, digital cameras).
14 days: small appliances (coffee makers, microwaves, fridges, air conditioners, fans).
14 days: furniture, disassembled and safe to ship.

Can't be returned

Gift cards, prepaid cards and phone cards
Opened boxed software and all downloadable software
Custom-ordered or custom-assembled furniture, unless it arrived defective
Inflated balloons and balloon tanks
Halloween costumes after 31 October of the year you bought them, and only unopened before that
AppleCare+ bought anywhere other than Staples (Staples cannot cancel it)

The catch

The item must come back in sellable condition with its original packaging, the UPC, the manuals, all the parts and the receipt or packing slip.
Staples says it monitors returns and can limit or refuse them.
No receipt, in store: in-store credit only, at the lowest selling price of the last 30 days, and you must show government-issued ID.
A coupon is forfeited once used. Its value may be spread across all the items, and you only get back what you actually paid.
